Q What do you do in the wintertime?

A The two main things are long tyerm project work and administrative work with budget and hiring. We don't really shut down in the winter. This year we had construction going on all winter. That means that not only do we have to monitor the current construction but also plan out the upcoming round of projects. Under me, there is an administrative person and three foremen who do most of the day-to-day operations.

QDo most people come up th eranks the way you did?

A It's basically divided, some people come up the engineering rank and others come up the foreman ranks. The foreman ranks usually are people who began as carpenters or plumbers or trades persons.

QMany of hte park jobs necessitate a college deree. Do you feel that there are more opportuniites for people without a college background in the maintenance division?

A The typical maintenance career ladder is some guy who gets a leg up somehow by gaining training in a trade to get a start on things. Possibly gone to a vo-tech school or gotten skills through the military. They get a leg up and come to the park service where we then provide additional training. Typically our higher grade jobs go to people who come to us fully skilled but some people do just work their way up.
