Q Do you find that most people who work in your division are interested in the environment or mostly just interested in protection?

AI truly believe that park service people really care about their job. They are obviously not in it for the money or the fustrations of working for the federal government. I know that they really care about the parks and the parks idea. Along with that, you have to care about the visitors. It's hard to explain, but let's say a family is on vacation from New York City and they come to Acadia. It could be as simple as they lock their keys in their car and you can help them. You might be the only ranger that they will ever see and that might have a big effect on them. How they view the entire National Park Service is how they are treated that one time. Hopefully they will get a bigger picture than that by going on some nature walks and learning about the resources that are being protected.

QDo you think that because Acadia is a smaller park, the role of protection is easier?

A I think they are all unique. Acadia has an intense June, July, and August.

Q What is your least favorite part of the job?

A The bureaucracy and the paperwork.

Q Do you miss being out in the field more?

A Oh yeah. That comes with moving up in your career as you get more responsibility. In order to supervise that many employees, you can't be out and about as much.
