I admit it--the only frog I've ever really cared about was Kermit and well, he's a puppet. So, naturally, I couldn't understand why the worldwide decline of the frog population affected me so strongly. They're slimy, make unsual, loud sounds and frankly, they are not terribly attractive. Even getting to dissect a dead one in high school didn't thrill me.
My interest piqued after watching a fascinating film about frogs at the International Film Festival in Montana last year. I was impressed by some of their specialized evolutions--a desert frog that can burrow in the sand for over seven years, patiently waiting for the next deluge of rain, the was a female frog that gives birth to her many live young through holes in the skin of her back. While I wasn't all of a sudden thinking they were the cutest creatures on this earth, I was curious as to why they are disappearing in such great numbers. I began to investigate...
