Now that my heart
has had it say, my mind has a different story. The truth of the
situation goes far deeper. I would be a very naive nature lady if I
expected people to be concerned about the environment when they don't
have food on their table or a roof over their head. What right do I
have to ask someone to be concerned about they health of a river when
they don't even have health insurance? How can I ask someone to help
save an endangered species when their life is in danger.
Maybe that's
why my head is so empty today -- the sad reality of what is happening to
today's youth is too hard to deal with. Before I can teach them to
respect nature, they need to learn how to respect themselves. I am
spending my summer learning that for the earth to matter, we need to
first teach the kids that they matter, too.
